Squad Selection for Mauricio Pochenttino becomes more tricky as his star defender, Sergio Ramos picks up an injury in Thursday’s training session. The Spaniard has already missed out on quite a few matches for PSG in the 2021-22 season.
Ramos suffered a knock in his calf while defending the ball in a training friendly. After reassessing the injury it was found that “Sergio Ramos has to rest for a low-grade muscle injury in his right calf”.
The length of the rest period is unknown at the current moment but based on the previous experience, Ramos is expected to be out for at least 3 weeks.
With difficult upcoming fixtures against Nice (Home), league holders, LOSC Lile (Away), and Champions League Round of 16 draws against Real Madrid, things seem extremely difficult for PSG and Pochenttino.
Players like Neymar, Wijnaldum who are already out injured, and Keylor Navas, Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos, Angel Di Maria, Abdou Diallo, and Idrissa Gueye who are off for international duty, Sergio Ramos’s injury has even worsened the situation.
“Calf curse” for Ramos
Sergio Ramos has constantly suffered from injuries for the past 2 seasons. These injuries have mostly been in the right calf region. Even after regular physio and fitness sessions, the situation didn’t seem to improve.
Since his move to PSG, Ramos has been nothing but a “bench-warmer”, playing only 5 times the whole season. Ramos transferred from Real Madrid where he suffered 3 successive calf knocks.
His recent calf injury puts him out for at least 2 to 3 weeks, which means that Ramos will miss PSG’s Champions League encounter against his former side, Real Madrid.
Selection “Dilemma”
With most of his main men out, Mauricio Pochettino is currently facing a difficult situation in terms of squad selection. To fill out an 18-man squad, Pochenttino has to depend on PSG’s younger academies.
Based on Ramos’s recovery and PSG’s medical staff, Ramos could be prepared early for the Round of 16 Clash against Real Madrid.
Ramos’s Latest Performance
PSG’s last match against Reims was a breakthrough performance by Ramos. Playing the full 90 minutes and scoring a goal, Ramos bossed the center circle. With his heroic tackles and possession-based gameplay, Ramos was named the man of the match.
This performance was however turned to vain due to the injury suffered in Thursday’s training session.
Hoping for a speedy recovery for Sergio Ramos who has suffered enough already.
