Asian World Cup Qualifiers Gets Interesting as Oman hosts Australia

The FIFA World Cup Qualifier clash between Oman and Australia will go underway on February 1, 2022. The match will be held at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Muscat, Oman. The match will begin at 9:30 PM IST.

As it currently stands, Australia and Oman, both are in the same group for the third round of the world cup qualifiers. Australia stands 3rd in their group with 14 points whereas Oman stands 4th with 7 points. According to qualification rules, the top 2 teams of the group will earn direct qualification to the next rounds.

The Australian side is coming into this match with high motivation as they emphatically won their last match against Vietnam, 4-0. Oman on the other hand lost their previous match against group leaders, Saudi Arabia, by 1-0.

Previous Meeting

The previous meeting between these two sides turned out to be bitter for Oman as their side was thrashed 3-1 by the Australians. Goals scored by Mabil, Boyle, and Duke were enough to take the Australian side to victory.

Oman did, however, try to come back by scoring an equalizing goal at the 28th-minute mark but it all went to vain as Australia managed an emphatic 3-1 final score.

Qualifications chances

Standing 7 points above the 4th placed Oman, Australia sits firmly on the Fourth round qualification spot. But as the whole squad is motivated, Australia still aims for the second spot in the group which will earn them a direct qualification to the FIFA World Cup 2022.

In order to achieve this, the Australians have to ensure that they win each of their remaining 4 matches.

Oman on the other hand finds itself in a tough spot. With managing only 7 points in 7 matches, the chances of Oman’s qualification are really tough. They are heavily dependent on the top three teams to drop points and have to win all of their remaining matches.
