The AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022 went underway on January 20, 2022. The 20th Edition of the Women’s Asia cup is being held in the subcontinent of India across three venues which are Mumbai Football Arena, Mumbai, DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai and Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Pune.
To keep the spread of COVID-19 virus at the minimum, The Asian Football Confederation decided to keep the only three venues for the entire tournament. The tournament’s first match was held between China and Chinese Taipei at the Mumbai Football Arena.
The match ended up being a hammering for the Chinese Taipei team as they lost the match 4-0.
There are a total of three groups, Group A, B and C. Each group has four teams out of which top two teams from each group and the two best third-placed teams will qualify for the further rounds. The group stage will be concluded on January 27, 2022.
After the group stage has been concluded, a draw will take place which will decide which will decide the Quarter Finals of the tournament which will be held on January 30, 2022. Top 4 teams left after the Quarter Finals will play in the Semis which will be held on February 3, 2022.
The Final of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022 will be held on February 6, 2022 at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai.
The Host’s Misery
Amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, as many as 12 players from the India women’s football team were tested positive for the virus. Due to this reason, their match against the struggling Chinese Taipei was cancelled.
It takes at least 7 days to heal from the COVID infection and as the India women’s football team failed to name required minimum of 13 players for the remaining matches, they had to withdraw from the entire tournament.
This came out as a big blow to the India women’s football team and the Indian Football Federation as the team had to withdraw without even playing a single match at their home turf.
