According to reports released by the Metro, new Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino plans to make 19-year-old Bayern Munich winger Julian Green his first summer recruitment ahead of next season. The former Southampton manager had Green watched on a number of occasions as a youth player but is now ready to bring the USA international to the Premier League.
Green signed a professional contract with Bayern Munich to stay at the club until 2017 and made his professional debut on 27 November 2013, coming on as an 88th minute substitute for Mario Götze in their UEFA Champions League game against CSKA Moscow. He was again named in Bayern’s squad for the 2013 FIFA Club World Cup and came on as a late replacement for the injured Arjen Robben, but has since struggled to break into the first team.
The highly rated winger is said to be interested in a move to another big club in Europe to continue his education and improve his chances of playing regular football as well as cementing his position in the USA team ahead of future outings.
Green, whose main strengths are his pace and agility, made 23 appearances for Bayern’s reserve team last season and scored 15 goals. A very direct winger, Green has a good chance to flourish and adapt very quickly to the English style of football.
USMNT Coach Jürgen Klinsmann had Green scouted for two years before handing him a call to the national team for friendlies in November last year, but he declined the call due to being ineligible to play unless a one-time switch allowed for players with dual nationalities was filed, something Green said he was not ready to do. Instead, he joined the German U19 team for a friendly against France. He trained with the United States ahead of their match against Ukraine on 5 March 2014 before filing for a one-time switch to play for the United States on 18 March 2014.
Spurs are looking to better their performances this term after finishing last season in a disappointing 6th place with 69 points. Though not a marquee player, Green is definitely going to add some bite to Tottenham’s attack line.
USA Captain Clint Dempsey also joined both Klinsmann and Pochettino in praising the starlet. “He has good feet, he has good decision making,” he told Goal USA via ESPN. “I think that by playing with a club like Bayern Munich, you get great coaching, and you can see that he’s a kid that has a bright future and we’re happy to have him.”
Green celebrated his 19th birthday last Friday with the USA squad bound for Brazil. His selection for the global showpiece would raise his stocks and if he gets to play and performs well, Spurs should then be prepared to pay an even higher fee.
