Inter Milan Confirm Signing of Manchester United Captain Nemanja Vidić

After eight years at the club, Manchester United’s Serbian defender Nemanja Vidic is set to leave for Italian side Inter Milan. Signed in 2006 from Spartak Moscow, Vidic has made 288 appearances in the heart of the Manchester United defense. During his time with the Red Devils, he formed a formidable defense partnership with Rio Ferdinand, helping Manchester United to five Premier League titles, three League Cups, one Champions League title, and one Club World Cup.

But what is Manchester United’s loss is very much Inter’s gain, as Inter president Erik Thohir points out: “He’s one of the world’s best defenders and his qualities, international pedigree and charisma will be an asset to the team and help bring through our younger players.”

Perhaps a move to the Italian game will suit Vidic; for all his qualities, he has lost some of the pace that made him such a quality defender in the Premier League in the latter part the 2000s. With Inter looking to rebuild themselves as a European force under Walter Mazzarri, they could be the ideal club for Vidic to end his career at. Despite the fact that he is ageing, he still has lot to offer in terms of his aerial presence and his reading of the game.

One of the biggest challenges facing David Moyes now is who he will bring in to replace his captain. German international Mats Hummels has been suggested as a potential replacement. The Borussia Dortmund defender has been one of the best center-backs in Europe over the last few seasons, and at 25, he is only hitting the peak of his powers.

Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala has been suggested as another potential replacement. The French defender has earned himself a huge reputation after some dominating performances for both club and country. Still only 23, Manchester United could get ten years out of the former Standard Liege center-back.

Another big question from the Vidic transfer is who will be the next Manchester United captain? Wayne Rooney is one of the leading candidates; the 28-year-old has recently signed a stellar new deal and is one of the senior member sat Manchester United after ten years with the club.

Phil Jones has also been named as a potential captain; the former Blackburn Rovers defender has been one of the more regular fixtures in the Manchester United team this season as the ‘utility man’. That is what may hinder the 23-year-old, but with him unable to nail down a permanent position in the team he may not be the best player to give the armband to.

Michael Carrick is also a significant candidate to be the next Manchester United captain. The 32-year-old has racked up over 200 appearances for the Red Devils and he plays in the position where a fair few captains play: defensive midfield. One argument that can be made against him is that he may be coming to the end of his Manchester United career given he is on of the wrong side of thirty.
