Sebastian Rudy ~ TSG 1899 Hoffenheim to Bayern Munich ~ Free Transfer
Do not let the lack of a transfer fee fool you; this was arguably the best transfer deal of the entire summer. Sebastian Rudy had long been an established piece at Hoffenheim for the past seven seasons, before moving from Sinsheim to Munich in a deal that was agreed during last season.
The versatile central midfielder, also capable of being deployed as a right-back and on both flanks of a midfield four, gives new manager Carlo Ancelotti a very important tactical piece moving forward. He’s already performed well for the club in their Supercup win over Dortmund, as well as in their comfortable 5-0 win in the first round of the DFB Pokal against 3.Liga-side Chemnitzer FC.
A full German international, who is creative from deeper areas in midfield while capable of maintaining strong positional awareness and astuteness in the tackle, Rudy is a very good replacement for the now retired Xabi Alonso. This would allow the likes of Thiago Alcántara, Joshua Kimmich, and fellow new-boy Corentin Tolisso to be deployed in their more preferred and effective positions.
Trophies are won and lost in midfield, and though replacing Alonso was never going to be easy, Rudy not only fits the Bayern bill with regards to their needs, but his quality as a player means he will likely be a key component in his new home with immediate effect.
