Bayern Munich’s Swiss winger Xherdan Shaqiri looks to be prime for a shock move to AS Roma. Mathias Sammer, the Bayern Sporting Director, has recently stated that “Xherdan is an important player for the future… There are no thoughts of him leaving.” Despite this, Roma have still pursued an active interest in Shaqiri.
Now, reports have emerged stating that the 22-year-old has agreed to personal terms with the Rome club. Roma center-back Mehdi Benatia has also been mentioned as a sweetener to the deal, as Bayern manager Pep Guardiola has taken a liking to him.
Shaqiri has only been with the Bavarian club for a couple of seasons, but recently saw his appearances drop from 39 to 26 during his second season. The great form shown by players such as Mario Gotze, Thomas Muller, Franck Ribery, and Arjen Robben has been the cause of this. They have all forced Shaqiri to search for first-team football elsewhere.
Roma finished second in Serie A last term, their highest finish since the 2009-10 season. Most importantly, it meant that they qualified for this season’s UEFA Champions League. The team is using this to their advantage by bringing in new signings. They have already brought in Seydou Keita from Valencia, Juan Iturbe from Hellas Verona, and Ashley Cole from Chelsea. But there’s no doubt that Shaqiri would be the most high profile signing for the club.
He recently had a fantastic World Cup and was the most dynamic player for Switzerland, creating chance after chance. Shaqiri finally got his reward in the final group match, when he picked up a hat-trick against Honduras. Though Switzerland were eliminated in the Round of 16, he was a big part of the reason that the team got to that point. He completed the tournament with three goals and two Man of the Match awards.
Shaqiri was one of the flashiest players at this World Cup. There are numerous big clubs that would love to have a player like him. But if Roma were to pick him up, it would be a fitting addition during the transfer window. His potential link up play with forwards Mattia Destro and Gervinho could be vital to the team’s Serie A challenge. Juventus’ Serie A title defense could be in doubt with Shaqiri in the Roma lineup.
